The Marion County Commission is partnered with the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection, the WV Dept. of Corrections, the Marion County Solid Waste Authority, and the WV Division of Natural Resources to locate and cleanup illegal dump sites and to prosecute violators of littering and dumping laws.
- There are no authorized dumps or landfills currently in Marion County. All such illegal areas are subject to cleanup.
- Individuals who are caught littering or dumping can be fined up to $2,000 and jailed for up to 1 year.
- Persons dumping commercial items (wound cable, roofing shingles, high pressure hose and other materials common to contractors or business companies) can face fines up to $10,000.
- Brush, cut trees, block, railroad ties and other items thought to be OK for the environment is illegal dumping. Some regular trash collection services wil pick up items that wil fit into the back of the truck.
- Littering and dumping are a threat to the environment and to members of the community. Safety hazards exist to dirt bikers, hikers, 4-wheelers and children. The health hazards are commonly known. Mosquitoes breed in anything that holds water, not just tires. The rodent population is higher in areas of illegal dumping.
